Caring for your crystals

How To Cleanse Your Crystals

In order to keep our crystals and gemstones in tip top shape we must clear them regularly. Crystals absorb energies and can be knocked “out of tune” like a musical instrument. In order to reap all the benefits of a crystal, it's important to “tune it” back so it can keep on keeping on doing it’s thang. Below are some methods most effective for keeping your babies so fresh and so clean, clean!

Sage

Crystals can be cleared in many, many ways. One of the most popular and efficient ways is using a smudge wand. Smudging your stone is said to clear inharmonious vibrations and restore its natural energy. Sage is an herb that is used to clear whatever energy that is present, positive and negative, within the object or space you set your intention on. It gives you a clean slate, one where you can purely immerse into.

You’ll need:

  • A fire safe bowl

  • A lighter or matches

  • Loose or bundled sage

If you can’t smudge outdoors, make sure you are near an open window. This will allow the smoke and negative energy to leave the space.

When you’re ready, light the tip of the sage with the flame. Transfer the sage to your non-dominant hand and firmly grasp your stone and move it through the smoke.

Allow the smoke to envelop the stone for about 30 seconds. If it’s been a while since your last cleansing or you feel the stone is holding onto a lot, consider smudging for an additional 30 seconds.

Approximate duration: About 30 to 60 seconds per stone

DO use this for any stone.

DON’T burn your house down.

Salt

You can use elements of the earth, like salt. Natural salts like:

  • Pure sea salt

  • Himalayan sea salt,

  • Black salt

  • Any natural, rock salt.

Natural salts have an amazing way of absorbing negative energy. You can place crystals in a bowl of salt or make salt water. Try to steer clear of iodized or table salts, if you want maximum clearing results. Make sure that the stone is completely submerged, if using salt water.

Approximate duration: A few hours up to a few days.

DO use hard stones like quartz or amethyst.

DON’T use salt water on soft, porous or trace metal stones, like malachite, selenite, halite, calcite, lepidolite, and angelite. Use caution when using dry salt, it could scratch the surfaces of your gemstones.

If you have a stone that you are unsure of. Look it up first before you do something you might regret. :)

Brown rice

Rice has been known to have the ability to absorb negative energy.

TO DO this, fill a bowl (ceramic, wood, or glass) with dry brown rice. With the bowl in your hands, take a few deep breaths to center yourself and say aloud or in our head, “With this rice, I cleanse and purify my crystals”. Visualize a bright white light coming from your hands and surrounding the bowl of rice. Once the intention has been set, bury your stones beneath the grains. Dispose of the rice immediately after cleansing, as the rice is said to have absorbed the energy you’re trying to eradicate. Hasta la vista, baby!

DO use this on any crystal or gemstone.

DON’T eat the rice.

Approximate duration: At least 24 hours.

Natural Light

The most powerful, effective, AND convenient way is cleaning your crystals by good old fashioned sunlight. The crystals are getting energy from source first hand! This method also CHARGES your crystals too!

DO set your stone out before nightfall and plan to bring it in before 11 a.m. This will allow your stone to soak up the goodness of both the moon and sun.

DON’T keep them out in direct heat for long periods of time. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may weather the stone’s surface, so make sure you return for it in the morning.

If you’re able to, place your stone directly on the earth. Soil is another medium used for cleansing crystals. The energy of Gaia returns the crystals energy back to its natural state.

Approximate duration: 10 to 12 hours.

Use this for: Most tumbled stones.

DON’T use this for vibrant stones like amethyst or citrine. In sunlight, they WILL fade. Also soft stones, such as celestite, halite, and selenite may be damaged by inclement weather.

DO remember where you place your crystals. Wherever they are, ensure they won’t be disturbed by wildlife or people. Folks out here thevin’, especially crows. They LOOOOOOVE shiny things. You. Have. Been. Warned.

Sound

Sound clearing allows a single pitch or tone to wash over an area, bringing it into the same vibration as the tone.

This can be accomplished using chanting, singing bowls, a tuning fork, or even a cute little bell. It doesn’t matter what key the sound is, so long as the sound emitted is loud enough for the vibration to fully encompass the stone.

By using sound to clear your crystals, you don't have to worry about introducing other interference into the crystal, as long as you use the right sounds. That's because the sound is a physical energy that, if played loud enough, can make the molecules in objects move. But, once the sound stops, the physical objects will return to their natural vibrational state.

When we use sound to clear crystals, the crystals don't actually move into resonance with the sound being played, because crystals use light vibrations, not sound vibrations. What the sound actually does is moves the molecules in the crystals, releasing energy and resetting them back to their base resonant frequency.

This method is ideal for collectors who have a crack-head amount of crystals or big ass crystals to big to move. Or you can do this method if you just want to save some time and do them all at once.

Approximate duration: 5 to 10 minutes.

DO use this for any stone.

DON’T play music that triggers negative emotions.

Breath

Breath work can also be an effective cleansing method. It's another way to put your intentions into physical form.

To get started, hold the stone in your dominant hand. Focus on your intention for a moment and deeply inhale through your nostrils.

Bring the stone closer to your face and exhale short, forceful breaths through the nose and onto the stone to bring the stone to its highest vibration.

Approximate duration: About 30 seconds per stone.

DO visualize your breath as a pure white light coming from your mouth, envisioning your breath cleansing the stone of all energy.

DON’T try to cleanse your friends with this method. They might not appreciate it like a crystal does. Crystals also don’t have noses.

Visualization

Although this is considered the safest way to clear stones, it can be intimidating for some. The more in tune you are with your sense of self, the easier it may be to redirect your energy to the stone you want to restore.

Our thoughts are a highly powerful source of energy. They are able to transform emotions, energetic tension, and cleanse crystals. That means, all you have to do is imagine the crystal is surrounded by white cleansing light. Then picture all the negative energy in the crystal being drawn out and neutralized. Be the Jedi, young grasshopper.

Take a few minutes to ground and center your energy, then pick up your stone and visualize your hands filling with white, radiant light.

See this light surround the stone and feel it growing brighter in your hands. Envision the impurities flushing out of the stone, allowing the stone to shine brighter, with a renewed purpose.

DO continue this visualization until you feel a shift in the stone’s energy or you feel that it's good. Trust what you feel.

DON’T do this method if you have a hard time visualizing things.

Approximate duration: About 1 minute per stone.

Use this for: Any stone.

Happy Cleansing!!
